In Sept 2024, I was awarded a Royal Society Career Development Fellowship (~£690,000) to pursue independent research titled ‘A systems approach to unravel neural regulation of embryonic haematopoiesis’. Here are the press releases from the Royal Society, Newcastle University, and NIHR BRC.

In August 2023, I was an invited panellist in conversation with Dr Sasha Henriques and Wellcome Collections Youth Panel about equity and ethics in scientific research. This programme was inspired by the Genetic Automata exhibition, which examines race and identity in an age of avatars, videogames and DNA ancestry.
In May 2023, I was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Leading Edge Fellowship in recognition of my postdoctoral work and it’s impact on life sciences research. I presented my research at the Leading Edge Fellowship Symposium in June 2023, and my talk is recorded and available on YouTube.
In April 2023, I was shortlisted as a finalist for the British Society for Immunology Early Career Researcher’s Award, in recognition for my research into human fetal immunology.
In April 2023, I was shortlisted for the Newcastle University Engagement and Place Early Career Researcher’s Award for my co-production of a whodunnit science fair for 420 students aged 4-11. Our mission was to promote widespread, early, and diverse enthusiasm for STEM subjects.
In Dec 2022, I was awarded a British Society for Immunology Career Enhancing Grant to conduct a lab placement within the lab of Prof Dana Pe’er at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, USA, to expand my single cell multiomic data analysis skills. In November 2023, I wrote an Immunology News article to share my experience.
In September 2022, I presented on my academic journey from PhD to postdoc within the Human Cell Atlas consortium at the HCA WSSS final scientific meeting. My talk is recorded and available on YouTube (4:59:26-5:18:35).
In May 2022, I attended a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative -hosted workshop, where we discussed the creation of single-cell atlases and worked collectively to improve the computational methods necessary to compile and integrate data. Following this workshop, I was interviewed for a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative article titled ‘Meet the Single-Cell Scientists Mapping Cells in the Human Body’.

In Feb 2021, I joined the Data Visualisation Society’s Outlier Conference ‘#BlackInDataWeek’ panel, where I speak (0:00-06:53) about the BlackInDataWeek online conference and campaign. In November 2020, I was interviewed for a Nature Careers feature article, titled ‘Blood, sweat and tears’: Building a network for Black scientists’, which reported on the representation of Black people in STEM fields in the UK, and the ways Black researchers connect and support one another professionally.
In Oct 2020, I spoke in a two-part interview with Asma at the ‘Her Royal Science’ podcast. Asma runs this podcast to celebrate individuals from minoritised groups in STEM, and to provide a forum to inspire the next generation of STEM researchers. Transcripts are provided to make the podcast accessible.
In part one of the ‘Her Royal Science’ podcast: ‘Connections’, we discussed my PhD research and the importance of community. We also discussed navigating the academy while a womxn/Black. Please note TWs for grieving/mourning in response to police brutality and the murder of George Floyd.

In Sept 2020, I was part of the Pint of Science ‘Skin, Society, Science’ panel , which featured Black scientists across the world. I spoke about my PhD research and my experiences with Rheumatoid Arthritis. (speaking at following time-points - 5:23-7:20, 16:55-19:10, 24:54-26:30).
In August 2020, I co-founded Black In Data, and we immediately began preparation for #BlackInDataWeek, a week-long celebration to (1) highlight the valuable work and experiences of Black people in the field of data, (2) provide community, and (3) share educational and professional resources. Blossom Onunekwu of BlackInData wrote this article, sponsored by our partners at the Data Visualisation Society, about why Black In Data was founded and our hopes for the future. Blossom is a data scientist, blogger and self-taught coder, with whom I shared opinions with in this piece.
In the summer of 2020, I supervised an A-Level student for a Nuffield Foundation Future Scholars Programme virtual research placement (driven by COVID-19 lockdown restrictions) - Newcastle University press wrote about the student's experience.
